David Simpson abstract, Minas Avetisyan painting performed well at Roland

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Roland Auctions NY‘s April 29 Estates Auction featured hundreds of lots of fine art, decorative arts, antique and vintage furniture, textiles, silver, jewelry, rugs, collectibles, Asian art and lighting.

Works of Modern and Contemporary art became the top sellers of the day. A George Grosz (German-American, 1893-1959) watercolor, bearing the title Let Me Feel Your Pulse, claimed top-lot honors when it earned $23,750. It was originally commissioned by George Macy of the Limited Editions Club & the Heritage Press.

A circa-1967 Thomas Downing (American, 1928-1985) abstract angular composition, rendered in oil on canvas on a wood stretcher, in green, purple and brown, titled Twelve, sold high at $21,250; while a 1963 Minas Avetisyan (Armenian, 1928-1925) oil on canvas, dubbed View in Jajura, brought $20,000. Painted in the Fauve style, it is signed at the lower left and had a certificate of authenticity from Gayane and Arman Avetisyan.

Also, an untitled David Simpson (American, b. 1928-) oil-on-canvas painting on a round stretcher, having an orange ground with green semi-circles, went for $5,937. It is signed on the back, dated 12/1969, and measures 53 1/4in in diameter.

A unique, four-part Old Masters European mural, removed from a private estate in West Virginia, sold for $11,250, and a French wallpaper scene realized $18,750. The latter lot comprised 24 panels of antique French wallpaper depicting two scenes sharing the title Chasse Dite D’Apres Vernet, from the first edition printing in circa 1835. The panels were 75in high.
