Herbert Siebner RCA, CGP, BCSA B: 1925 D: 2003. Original Exhibition gallery poster mounted on heavy card stock for his hand printed graphics at Winchester Galleries circa 1993. There are four small thumbtack holes - one in each corner on the extremities of this piece. We are current listing 4 more Siebner pieces in this auction. Herbert Siebner was a painter, muralist, print maker and sculptor born in Stettin, Germany. He emigrated to Victoria, Canada in 1954, and lived and worked there for the rest of his life. His mediums were oil, watercolor, casein, ink, acrylic, gouache, crayon, woodcut, lithography, graffito-encaustic, monoprints, silkscreen, and cement for sculpture. His style is expressionist, some of it described as neo-primitive. His subjects include landscapes, female figures, mythology and symbolism. He was also influenced by Dada. He studied at the Atelier Max Richter in Stettin 1943 and under Max Kraus and Carl Hofer at the Berlin Academy from 1946 to 1949. He taught at the University of British Columbia Extension Department in Vancouver, the University of Washington Seattle and at the University of Victoria. He has traveled extensively to Italy and Greece.

He was a member and president of the Limners, a prominent group of Victoria artists which included Maxwell Bates, Richard Ciccimarra, Robert de Castro, Nita Forest, Myfaanwy Pavelic, Colin Graham and Pat Martin Bates. He was also a member of the Canadian Group of Painters and the B.C. Society of Artists. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1973.He has been showing his work since 1949 with groups, in addition to those listed above, which include the Canadian Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers; the Ontario Society of Artists, the Point Group and Western Artists. He had solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in 1955, 1966, 1970, 1984 and 2003; at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 1958; and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1956 and 1965. He has also participated in shows in Switzerland 1958 Yugoslavia 1959, the Canadian Biennial in Ottawa 1958 & 62 Italy 1969 & 72 and Spain 1971.His works are in many private and public collections including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Seattle Art Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. His murals are located at the University of Victoria and the Victoria Art Gallery.

As a prominent Canadian artist his work is discussed in many books on Canadian art. There are also dozens of newspaper and magazine articles. Two books deal specifically with his art, they are Herbert Siebner - A Celebration 1993 compiled and edited by Robin Skelton & James Bennett, published by Herbert's Brother's Press, hardcover, 127 pgs, in colour and Herbert Siebner: A Monograph 1979 by Robin Skelton, published by Sono Nis Press soft cover,104 pgs, in color and black and white. There is also A Passion For Art - The Art and Dynamics of the Limners 1996 by Patricia E. Bovey. He is listed, as well, in Jaques Cattell Press, Who's Who in American Art 15th Edition 1982, Who's Who in American Art 2001 -2002, A Dictionary of Canadian Artists 1974, and The Collector's Dictionary of Canadian Artists at Auction.
